Species Information

General:
Perennial tufted herb from short rhizomes; stems wiry, erect, 10-40 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal, short, nearly circular in cross-section, tapered, the uppermost of the basal sheaths with well-developed blades 2-7 cm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a subterminal, loose head with 1 to 4 flowers, appearing as if on the side of the stem; perianth segments green to brown, subequal, pointed, 5-7 mm long; stamens 6; anthers about 1.5 mm long, shorter than the filaments; involucral bracts 2-5 cm long, cylindrical, resembling a continuation of the stem.
Fruits:
Capsules, pointed, about the same length as the perianth segments; seeds spindle-shaped, 0.6 mm long, with long, tail-like appendages at each end.

Habitat / Range

Dry meadows and rocky slopes in the subalpine and alpine zones; frequent in BC south of 55degreeN, rare W of the Coast-Cascade Mountains; E to AB and S to CO, UT, NV and CA.
